FAQs
What does “gender affirming” voice lessons mean?
Voice lessons here are for everyone, cisgender or transgender. Gender-affirming means that I teach in a way that keeps your gender identity, dysphoria, and general comfort level in mind.
Gender affirmation is not only beneficial to trans people, cis people engage in it too! If you’re a cis person, think for a moment about what makes you feel happy about your gender, or what physical attributes make you feel good. Sometimes, cis people end up with voices they don’t feel represent them, and they deserve to feel validated in their gender identity just as much as anyone else.
Gender affirming simply means we don’t assign you a certain voice type or style based on the mechanics of your voice. We take both your personal identity AND the physical mechanics and find something that fits both.
Do you offer in-person lessons?
At this time, no, unfortunately. All my lessons are online through Google Meet. If there is a platform that works better for you, we may be able to work something out.
Can you teach my elementary school child?
Short answer, probably not. Long answer, online lessons tend to work better for adults because they know their way around a computer, and can pull up things like backing tracks or lyrics without any help. Kids often are unable to do this and they tend to be less engaged overall in online lessons versus in-person. If you are putting your child in music lessons you want them to be in an environment they will be able to engage. That being said, if your transgender kid is in need of gender-affirming voice lessons and there’s no one locally who can fill that niche for you, I will definitely do what I can to make it work.
