I believe singing is a visceral, cathartic, and joyful form of expression that everyone should be able to experience. Whether professional or amateur, every time someone sings a song, they are bringing their own unique identity to it. That individuality should be celebrated and preserved. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to use their voice to express themselves in this way, and I believe everyone can, given the right tools and training. My approach to teaching voice is something of a holistic approach--I use techniques from both contemporary and classical pedagogy to help you make the sound you want to make.
Overall, in lessons, we will primarily address issues with alignment and tension, breath, phonation, registration, resonance, and expression. In my teaching, I use a combination of imagery, technical concepts, movement, and attention to dramatic intent. We will also touch on vocal health and maintenance. Each student has a different way of learning and I adjust my lessons to fit the individual student. Over the course of our lessons, I will help you build a book of repertoire that you can look back on and be confident and proud of every time you perform.
In addition to helping you develop your voice, I also have experience teaching and mentoring in songwriting, self-accompaniment, performance anxiety, and addressing/managing vocal dysphoria. My goal is to be a teacher for people who felt unheard or unseen by traditional vocal lessons, and teach from a perspective of inclusivity.
